Last Sunday after church we had family pictures and a dinner date scheduled with friends. That all got tossed out the window as we spent the afternoon and evening in the hospital, at 31 weeks and 5 days… I was having contractions.
Sitting in church, I could feel my tummy tighten and release. After three hours of consistent contractions 2 to 3 minutes apart, I was worried. All the usual remedies for Braxton Hicks were not working (lying down, drinking water, a warm bath). My midwife agreed we should head to the hospital.
We arrived to the hospital for monitoring, the baby’s vitals were good, but I was definitely having contractions every few minutes. After two injections of terbutaline, IV fluids, and oral Nifedipine the contractions started to slow and finally stopped. I was also given the first of two steroid injections to help speed up baby’s lung development as a precaution, if he decided to make an early appearance.
I’m anxious about:
Keeping this little one in the oven for a few more weeks! With medication and rest, my contractions have been under control. The next few weeks are critical and I’ll feel better once I get past the 35 week mark, with hopes of delivering full term after 37.
I’m excited about:
Meeting our little guy, but I am more than happy to wait a few more weeks!! (Hint hint baby… just stay put!)
I’ve been on high alert to every little feeling. Is the baby moving less than normal? More than normal? Was that a contraction? I am doing my best to rest (which you know is torture for me). My mom flew in last Wednesday which has been a huge help and the twice daily dose of Nifedipine keeps me feeling pretty tired all day. I’ve been craving dark chocolate covered almonds, love eating cereal and milk, and have two new sexy spider veins that have decided to grace me with their presence on my legs.
He is warming up to the idea of being a big brother. A few weeks ago we visited one of Little J’s buds who recently became a big brother. This was the first time Little J showed interest in a baby and didn’t throw a fit when it was time for me to hold that precious little one. Yay!! Progress!!
Whenever this little one decides to arrive, my prayers are that he is healthy. I pray we have a normal delivery and healthy baby who does not need to stay longer in the hospital. That he will have no problems breathing and nursing.
