Just a few months into being a mom of two, I wanted to share my favorite baby products. Many I used with little J and continue to love and a few are new to little G and have become part of my “must haves” for baby. These are the items I use daily, many can grow with baby after the first few months, but a few are specifically for the newborn phase.
Baby Bjorn Balance: I’ll admit I was a little taken back by the price ($140-$180) depending on the fabric you choose, but I use this item daily. Multiple times a day. I love that it is lightweight, super portable, and folds flat. When little J was just a few months old we flew to visit family in California, I took the Baby Bjorn Balance with us. Besides being lightweight and compact, the fabric “seat” completely pulls off and can be thrown in the wash. Countless times have my boys pooped, spit up, drooled, etc. on the fabric and I just toss it in the wash. Sometimes it gets washed multiple times a day.
NoseFrida the Snotsucker by Fridababy: Yes, it looks gross. Fear not, there is a filter… you won’t suck up any of your sweet little baby’s boogies in your mouth. This snot sucker works. Throw out the “bulb” the hospital gave you because it doesn’t even come close to the boogie removing power of the NoseFrida. When your child is screaming at 2AM because they can’t breathe (and therefore can’t nurse) you will gladly suck all those boogies out and not think twice about it.
The Windi by Fridababy: If the NoseFrida was too much too handle, the Windi is going to definitely cause you to squirm… but before you skip over and move onto the next baby product, hear me out. The Windi works. Have you ever had a night with a gassy baby? I’ll tell you one thing that you won’t be doing… sleeping. Because gassy babies are unhappy, crying, fussing, not. sleeping. babies. Rub their tummies downward, put in the Windi and brace yourself for the amount of gas that comes out of that little bottom. No amount of bicycle legs, patting, shushing, walking, can accomplish what the Windi can accomplish in a matter of seconds. Everyone gets back to sleep faster. Praise. The. Lord!
Rock ‘N Play Sleeper: Those 1 AM, 3 AM, 5 AM feedings got a little easier when I didn’t have to get out of bed to grab my sweet little newborn. The Rock ‘N Play sat right next to bed an allowed me to pick up my baby without getting out of bed. The vibrating base helps sooth fussy babies and it also gently rocks. One warning with this product…. Your baby might like sleeping in it so much that transition to the crib could be problematic. It’s lightweight, small, portable and washable!
Sleep Gowns: It didn’t take long when “J” was a newborn to realize that those cute buttons, snaps, and zippers were no good between the hours of 10pm and 7am. Open bottom, elastic sleep gowns are the way to go for newborn pajamas. You are already sleep deprived, don’t make your poor brain try to figure out which button goes where for those multiple early morning feedings.
DOHM Sound Machine: We have an old house with character, and squeaks and creaks… right by the nursery door. This sound machine actually sounds like a fan running, because it IS a fan running (surrounded by a box). Before using a sound machine, “J” (who is a light sleeper) would wake if I walked past his door. I love the DOHM specifically because it is easy to use. There are three settings: fast, slow, and off. No timer to go off just as your little one is about to get into a deep sleep. I take this with us when we travel, I will have one in each child’s room.
These products are my favorites and I own them, but I have also come to appreciate borrowing baby items. This is a concept with my first child I didn’t really consider, we had just moved and didn’t have a strong friend and church network. With baby number 2, I try to borrow or buy used if possible. I have a wonderful circle of friends and we swap items regularly. The jumpers, swings, play gyms, walkers, etc…. each item is used for such a short period of time, save closet space… share baby items!
